Travertine

rock-sample-travertine

Travertine is a type of limestone that precipitates from hydrothermal springs. Unlike tufas which form where cold water temperatures are present, travertine forms in high temperature areas. It can be found in whitish gray, golden-brown, sandy yellow, tan/beige, and red colorations. Containing a soft, layered pattern, it is commonly used as flooring material in Tuscan and Spanish designs as well as sunrooms and outdoor patios. One famous travertine deposit is Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park.
